How You Can Disable the Visual Creator Agent in M365 Copilot Chat

Visual Creator Agent

The Visual Creator Agent is a configurable AI capability within Microsoft 365 Copilot that generates images from text prompts. Designed for integration into specific workflows, the agent supports features such as generating multiple image options, context-aware editing, and iterative modifications based on user input.

Copyright Commitment for the Image Creator Agent

Microsoft ensures that content generated by the Visual Creator Agent is safe for commercial use under its Copilot Copyright Commitment. This policy protects users from copyright claims related to the AI-generated outputs, provided the technology is used as intended. The commitment offers peace of mind, making the Image Creator Agent a reliable tool for creating visuals without intellectual property concerns.

Disabling the Visual Creator Agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot: Why and How

While it is technically possible to disable the agent in your organization—for instance, due to specific policy requirements—doing so is not generally recommended. The CCC provides strong assurances against copyright risks, making it a valuable feature for most environments. In this post, I’ll guide you through the process of disabling the Image Creator Agent, while also explaining why its use is generally safe and beneficial.

Disabling the Visual Creator Agent via the Admin Center

Disabling the Visual Creator Agent can be managed directly through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center under the Copilot settings. This feature allows administrators to control access to the Visual Creator Agent across the organization. Here’s how you can do it:

Access the Microsoft 365 Admin Center:

Navigate to Copilot Settings:

  • On the left-hand menu, select Copilot to open the Copilot management section.

Locate „Copilot Image Generation“:

  • Under the Settings tab, find the Copilot image generation option in the list.

Disable Image Generation:

  • In the popup menu, select the Don’t allow option.
  • This setting will disable image generation capabilities in Microsoft 365 apps and Designer.
  • Save your changes to apply the new configuration.

The Copilot Image Generation feature uses Responsible AI to ensure the prevention of harmful image uploads or generation. By selecting „Allow Copilot image generation (recommended)“, users can safely generate custom visuals within Microsoft 365 apps and Designer. If you choose „Don’t allow“, Copilot will only provide pre-existing stock or brand images, limiting the feature’s capabilities.

What Happens When the Visual Creator Agent is Disabled?

Once the Visual Creator Agent is disabled in the Admin Center, users attempting to generate images in Microsoft 365 Copilot will encounter a notification indicating that the feature has been turned off by their organization. For example:

„Your organization has turned off image generation. Contact your IT admin for more information.“
